After an adrenalin packed day of shark cage diving, swimming with sealions, or surfing some of the amazing beaches that Port Lincoln has to offer, there is nothing better than coming back and relaxing with friends, enjoying a drink and telling stories, and sharing a terrific meal.
Well, Robert Forster, owner and manager of the award winning Port Lincoln YHA has created just that experience for his guests.
Gone are the days of backpackers eating 2 minute noodles and vegemite on toast, when Robert sets up the equipment and fires up his burner its paella on the menu. With his special set up and signature recipe, it is a food safari that no rumbling tummy can resist.
And not just any paella, we are talking about seafood so fresh it has barely had time to stop moving since being hauled up from the pristine depths of the South Australian coastline.
The triple ring 600mm Garcima burner, specially imported from Spain, creates a ring of fire underneath one of the biggest paella pans you have ever seen.
As the fresh ingredients go into the enormous pan, the aroma fills the outdoor courtyard of Port Lincoln YHA, and emanates into the surrounding hostel.
Like a call of the wild after a day's adventure, guests begin to fill the eating area and watch the spectacular paella start to take form.
Robert's easy style and wealth of culinary experience soon has the guests gathered round the paella trading stories and experiences from their memorable food adventures. Guests from around the world become firm friends around the giant paella.
Robert sent us these photos taken at some of the legendary paella nights at the Port Lincoln YHA which are reproduced with permission in this article. Even better, he has shared his own paella recipe which you can read below, and see the delicious results in the photos.
